The Healing Properties of Turmeric

by doctorschoice on July 27, 2011

Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep
orange flesh. It has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent
of orange and ginger, and while it is well known as one of the ingredients used to make curry,
it also gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow color. Turmeric has also been used as a textile
dye and pigment in ancient cosmetics. However, turmeric is probably best known for its healing
properties and long history in both the traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic Indian systems of
medicine.
The medicinal properties of this spice have been well documented. Long known for its anti-
inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is proving beneficial in the
treatment of many different health conditions – from Alzheimer’s disease to cancer.
